ILO violation 87, 98 : Miguel ?ngel Ram?rez, a member of the banana workers? union Sindicato de Trabajadores Bananeros del Sur, was killed on March 2, 2008. The union was founded on 15 July 2007 by a group of workers - including Miguel ?ngel Ram?rez ? from the company Frutera Internacional Sociedad An?nima that produces bananas for the Chiquita brand. Four months after the workers had organised themselves the company obtained a list of all the founder members of the union and set about harassing and threatening them using its private security agents. Some were illegally detained as a means of pressurising them into resigning and at the end of November they were sacked from their jobs. Miguel ?ngel Ram?rez was forced to sign a resignation letter.: Guatemala

ILO violation 78,98 : Chiquita's Costa Rican subsidiary COBAL has sacked two union members for complaining about being exposed to a toxic chemical. lexander Reyes Zuniga, Jaime Blanco Juarez and Marco Gonzalez Borge reported to their supervisors that spraying of a toxic nematicide (used for killing worms in banana tree roots) was going on in the same area as they were harvesting bananas. They became nauseous and dizzy and Jaime Blanco had to go to the doctor, where he was held for tests for several hours. Alexander Reyes suffered symptoms of poisoning the following day, but was told to resume work regardless. The team complained to supervisors only to be accused of entering the area to be sprayed despite orders not to do so. Alexander Reyes and Marcos Borge were sacked for misconduct. Chiquita management did not conduct any medical examination, did not give the statutory three warnings for misconduct and continues to deny the workers' version.: Costa Rica

2000It is at this company that one owes the vulgarizing of the term "banana republic" when, in 1954, the CIA reverses the president of Guatemala which wanted to put its nose in the businesses of Chiquita. The multinational company was called then United Fruits. Number 1 of banana in the world, Chiquita is directed by the American billionaire Carl H Lindner, one of the largest individual contributors of the election campaign of Bill Clinton and the democrats (but the man, whose c?ur rather leans on the other side of the political chess-board finances, also republicans). Denouncing without relache the common organization of the European market, Chiquita profits from the support of the American authorities to try to put at bottom the device to work out in Brussels. : translateRFI
